Last night and for reasons unknown, I re-installed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. When this game was new in January 2002 (!) it was notable for being the first PC game to ship in the new small box packaging.
My fondest memories were not of the single player game (good but too heavily scripted - I gave up in the arcade-style shooting gallery house you defended) but rather the multiplayer and specifically, Team DM.
We'd play typically in teams of 2 on 2 and I think it may have been the simplicity that made it so fun. You got to pick one main weapon then were issued a sidearm and some grenades. And that was it. There were no pickups on the map, no health packs (unless you offed a player and could take his) and the only way to get a new weapon was to either respawn or pull one out of the cold dead hands of the enemy you just filled with lead.
Anyway, we played one game of MoH for a Smackdown which got an impressive 10 players showing up. We played on Destroyed Village and while things went relatively smoothly, the play experience was so utterly different than the cat and mouse style I was used to that I never used it for an SD after.
But now I'm wondering if it might be time to give it a go for nostalgia's sake. We may be entering the infamous summer lull, so turnout may be low, which will work to our advantage for MoH.
Any takers?
(BTW, the game now runs at 3 million FPS with all settings cranked but it doesn't hold up nearly as well graphically as Halo, for example.)
