... have a naming scheme at work that makes the ip address easier to remember than the computer?

my desktop pc at work is 10.0.128.36. that's how i remote desktop to it, get junk from it, whatever as i move around the building. It's name is some crazy acronym that means nothing to me and i can't ever hope to remember.

Ours are like that here, too. However, we can't even rely on the IP address as you're unlikely to get the same one when you reboot.

It's almost worse at home, though, with every upgrade or reformat I tend to rename the PC to Hutchprime-II or HutchprimeXP and I forget what iteration I'm on, or if I used a dash, and underscored or nothing. :(

I get to name my own computers. Easy easy :)

I set up or network here on a (insert major consumer brand name here) router. Everything is 192.168.xxx.xxx. The naming scheme is the easiest I could come up with. Everyone's PC name is the label speed of the CPU. I.E. My machine's network name is 1600mhz as it is an AMD 1600+

It makes it easy in a small office. Everytime we need to build a new machine, the CPU speeds have upped since the last time so there are no doubles and if someone trades or upgrades machines it's easy to keep the scheme.

So Kermit, you never have to order 2 machines at the same time?

Personally, I hate nonsensical naming schemes with numbers as the primary identifier. We had an IT company that mandated names of the format WA-DSK-1102. Everyone at work had to keep post-its on their monitors with their PC names, it was absurd.

In an office environment, I've found the best naming scheme involves the employee's names. So, John Doe's PC would be called jdoe. If they had more than one PC, it could be jdoe1 and jdoe2.

No. We're a pretty small office. We had to fire our only part timer, so now there are 3 of us and 6 computers including my mother's in the Day Care upstairs and the server.

If I ever HAD to build 2 at once I would just buy 2 different chips or call them 3500mhza and 3500mhzb

Kermit, you should capitalize on the small environment and pick cool names. I loved the days of naming scheme's being based on some geeky trivia.

theese, while dumb, are superior to the stupid corporate mandated names theese days:

greek gods
planets
star trek characters

or some that i worked with that were fun

chemical names of drugs
minerals
elements

or my favorites that i've used

latin names of reptiles (still i use this for all my machines. there's something really fun about finding a reptile that fits the machine.)

sandwich names. i set this up in my office a few jobs back. oh, it was great fun browsing the network and seeing Montecristo, and PattyMelt.

I do the same. I name my home network after characters of my favorite sci-fi tv show. Stargate. My wife's laptop ended up being T'ealc, whom she says reminds here of punjab from 'Anne'. So now she calls her laptop punjab ruining my naming scheme. sigh.

Stargate rules. At this point, I'm watching Sci-Fi for 4 hours straight on Friday nights (Firefly, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica, which is exceptional). Well, TiVoing it most nights, since it is Friday night and all. Altho I'm not entirely sold on the transplantation of the Farscape cast to SG1. If the little frog guy shows up, I may have to stop watching.

Our office has used two naming schemes over the years (it is also a small office), which combined with my inability to do much of anything in Unix, means we now have a mish-mash of both. The original scheme was, I think, colors... one machine was black, one green, one purple, etc. The second scheme was to name the machines for their users. Unfortunately, all those machines are now named for people who haven't been with the company since before I joined it. Seven years ago.

on a side note the entire coast guard network for my area has all it's servers named after NFL teams. is that safe to say out here on the wild web?

While I worked as a computer technician for a school district this past year, the computers were primarily named after the room number, followed by type of computer (it was a school, so they were Macs), followed by MHz. Then in the case of multiple computers with the same speed, we inserted a number. Like so:

310-G3 Blue Tower/300MHz 1

This was a 300MHz G3 Teal & White Tower that resided in room 310 (which happened to be the Middle School Science room). We also had eMacs, iMacs, G3 Beige, iBook, PowerBook...

Only problem was when we moved computers around, but we tried to avoid that during the actual school year.

Well, that went on a bit longer than I expected... :paddle:

Tai, every time I think you are weird, you prove I don't know the half of it.

I only have 3 PCs now, but narcissism (and characters in a highschool comic about jackrabbit) led me to my naming scheme. I have had:

hutchprime - ftp
warbunny - laptop
gretta, aramis - secondary
jackrabbit, jackrabbit2, gauge - primary
blackavar, hare - file/webserver

My two machines are named after ghosts in Pac Man. And some of you are dangerously obsessed with the :paddle: emoticon.

our naming scheme at work is 8 charectors long

char 1 & 2 is a code for which building its in

char 3 - 6 is a code for department

char 7 & 8 is just a sequntial number for that dept.

BBFINC04 = PC in the Finance department in B Building

that's actually a very informative, super efficent, yet totally unfun way to do it.
