I need some guidance since I am new to this class.
Well if you're going to be leveling your best bet is to start with an affliction/destro build, though the Demo tree has been upgraded I've never specced Demo. Demonology will give you lasting power but will gimp your DPS.
I would fill out Affliction tree first then go to Destro, something like http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warlocks/talents.html?0500230512201135100000000000000000505 0005122000000 Imp Corruption is a must.
Dark Pact is a great skill while leveling, at 60 I got rid of Dark Pact and put the talent into Ruin. Shadow Mastery/Ruin is your basic cookie cutter Lock build at 60.
Currently my lock is specced 7/7/37 because I just use him to farm so I kill shit real fast. I would check out the lock forums to read up on Demonology builds, I'm thinking of going that route soon.

I have nothing but the demonoligy tree and I don't think I can die.
I have also never felt my DPS was lacking. In fact, it has often surprised me.

I don't think I can die.
Try:
You + JR + a gong
Try:
You + JR + a gong
+ brick

Spec in Destro then go back to Demo. I'm sure your DPS is ok but it's totally gimped compared to a destro or sm/ruin lock. The demo tree makes you live longer is all.

BoX, can you also give some advice on how to use the various pets? I am very comfy soloing with my Voidwalker as it's almost like your own little tank/healer party. So I understand what he does and how to use him. I suppose the imp is good in a party with a tank as he gives a buff and neither I nor my pet should get beaten up too badly. But when I looked at my Succubus I was really a bit at a loss as to what she is good for. I had her out for a while just because she was new, but she just kept dying all the time. So I swapped back to my Voidy.
I don't have the Felhunter yet, but maybe you can still fill me in as to what situations he is most useful in. (I know my priest can't take out a lock in a duel when he has the Felhunter out, whereas I managed to defeat locks with any other pet. Don't know really why that is though.)

I think its because the Felhunter sucks the mana out of mana classes.

I just got the quest for the Succubus but is it worth getting right away?
I am also curious what is the best route for me to get into the Barrens to accomplish this quest?

I don't have a warlock yet, but word on the streets is that the succubus is the best pet for PvP. She's supposed to pick up adds and charm humaniods, which is for all intents a stun. I know I hate facing a lock with a succubus, but I don't mind the view while my pet gets killed.
All up to 60 I use my VW for soloing and grinding, I was Affliction build so the VW could hold the aggro for a while till I could just kill the mob. Once I respecced to Destro having the VW out was just a waste because it can't hold the aggro so I dumped 2 points into improved lash of pain and use my succubus for dps and the occasional seduce.
Basically it's imp for the buff, Succ for dps, Fel for killing casters and the added bonus of actually seeing the rogue 2 seconds before he kills you, and VW solo for tanking mobs as you slowing dps them down.
Succubus is probably your best pet for 1 on 1 pvp but Fel with group is nice, it eats buffs off enemies and debuffs off yourself and friends(sheep etc). It also has a spell lock which is like counterspell. A good lock with a Felhunter will kill a mage easily.
It all depends on your spec as well. If you're demo specced each pet also has an added buff when you summon and another when you sacrifice it.

I am doing the spec you linked and that seems to be working great for me.
I may wait a bit to get her until one of the high levels can escort me.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll look into my talents and see if they need to be changed. Is it correct to assume that depending on the talent tree you go up you either make yourself stronger or your pets? Would it make sense to focus on strong pets and respec toward self-strengthening at lvl 60?
