I took a peek last night (I'm like that). It works for new characters, too. I predict a surge in alts. The winter event lasts till January 2. Not sure if the jet packs do, too, but a lot of people would be very happy if it did. :)

Phase 2 of the event is now underway. Nothing major but some nice little tidbits:

There is a new contact for both heroes/villains that gives a mission to recover/steal four presents. Finishing the mission gives you access to the stocking cap (Santa hat) plus a free tailor session. The next phase, involving the "Gamester" starts on the 19th.

Note that as of today there is a bug that sometimes prevents zoning on certain ferries in CoV. Restarting the game fixed it for me (and is the recommended fix until the problem is patched).

Sadly, Carl the Bat cannot wear a Santa hat because of his giant bat ears. He has consoled himself by getting caught in the hair of unsuspecting children.

Phase 3 has begun. There are presents scattered throughout Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. Depending on whether you've been naughty or nice, you may receive a present inspiration, a temporary power or a whole lot of very angry snowmen ready to pound the stuffing out of you.

Also, the free jetpack is good for 30 days from when your character received it. I logged in a few lowbies on January 1st just in case.

After being whacked over the head for two consecutive issues, people are eyeing the upcoming Issue 7 warily, to see if the devs focus on new content or continue to "balance" the game with power/character/content changes.

I'm expecting most of I7 will focus on CoV and the high-end game of CoH (summed up best as "You want to fight an AV? Good, we have 20 million for you!") will continue to languish.

I logged in near the end of it to play some with my son and I couldnt beleive the number of jackoffs I ran into that day.

I am not sure what good the presents did other than spawn bad guys that looked like melted marshmallows that froze you in place and killed you quick if your guy was level 8, hehe, but one would think that if someone wandered by a present and saw you fighting the marshmallow creatures with a gift box next to you that by default it was yours. but I guess thats just me as I ran into 1 feak after another that would swoop in take the gift then run off.

Hey Ned, how about a short story on Melty Marshmallow creatures? :)

Oddly enough, any game system that allows people to behave like jerks pretty much guarantees that will happen.

I had snowmen spawn at +10 to my level once. I then learned to open presents in lower level zones. Nice concept, needs some tweaking. :)

As for marshmallow men stories, I'm afraid I have a date with a cow next.
