a 30something rogue tried to gank me in the wetlands last night. It went something like this.

Him: CS > SS
Me: FEAR > run like hell
Him: Some ranged attack > Sprint > Vanish > CS SS
Me: FEAR > run

He gave up after that.

It rocked. Nothing like getting away from a ganker.

I've done a shield-run away from many a ganker when I was in my 20-somethings, but now unless there is more than one I stand and fight. I've come to terms with Ganking as part of the game.

Besides, I've found that if I get killed, I have time to rally some help while running back to my corpse. If I run and get away, they will leave. If I die, they will corpse camp and I can get help to get revenge.

Enjoy it while you can. In later levels, rogues will kill you before you even have a chance to hit the fear button.

I realize he was an idiot (no back stab, no poison) and I know about higher lvl rogues as well :) . If I was him the priest would have been dead.

I'm definately not ready to take on a 5+ lvl horde in PvP yet with my priest. Being able to slip away from a ganker is almost as satisfying as killing a ganker for me. Yes I know that sounds strange.

I should also specify that when I was in the teens and 20's, I could escape from a would-be ganker because once I got a stun in I could get a 5 second head start on running. That certainly helps. But now at 34, anyone who is a high enough level to gank me has a mount. I can't get away. I may as well stay and fight.

I got that a lot last night on Baglesh or whatever his name is. Was an awesome battle though. Longest fight I've ever been in other than 100 trolls.

Actually, you CAN take down a rogue as a priest. I mean, I usually can't because I almost pee my pants every time one of them attacks me, and because I simply suck at moving my char fast enough. In my panic, I usually also forget to cast renew on myself. But even with all of these deficiencies, I can get it to be a very close match.

As far as strategy goes: yeah, try to hit the rogue with fear, but don't count on it working more than 20% of the time or for longer than what is takes to cast shield on yourself. Everybody is nearly immune to fear these days. The way to get down a rogue (same for warrior and hunter) is to let shadow word pain kill them. If you have it in your talent build, you can also use mindflay; but really, the trick is to save your mana to shield and heal yourself while pain is slowly killing your opponent. If you are good at moving your char, you just keep running around them staying out of melee range as much as you can. (This is usually where I fail.)

Warriors are even easier because their stuns are not quite as nasty as a rogues. On the other hand, when they have an arcanite reaper in their hand, you HAVE to be good at staying out of melee range or they'll just shred you.

Hunter: fear the stupid pet off, shield/renew, and hit him with all the DPS you got. Fast! Because those bastards can mana burn you.

And BTW, whether shadow or holy spec'ed does not make that much of a difference against melee classes. With shadow you lose health slower; with holy you are more effective at healing yourself. The trick is really not to waste your mana on offensive spells.

Caveat: These strategies work only if your opponent is not decked out in vastly superior gear than you. And yes, you WILL be dead no matter what you do if the rogue or warrior happens to be lucky and crits you either insanely high or 4 times in a row. You probably also need macros that cast shield and heals on yourself without losing your target on the enemy.

Beating a warlock depends entirely on what pet they use. Pallies usually own me because they throw up their shield and I waste my last mana on trying to hit them before I realize what's going on. What I can never EVER beat with my priest are mages and druids. To do that (especially without silence), I'd need about 20,000 mana (versus the 6,500 I have). :(

I have one PvP video that I downloaded a few months ago where a priest kicks ass. Sort of the "World of Priestcraft" except he does not do it in his undies. Hm, yeah, he is also an undead priest, which means he can add devouring plague to the list of nasty stuff to hurt people with. I have it on my computer at home, but I can mail it to you if you want. (Not sure I could still find the link to where I got it from.)
