Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieren Culkin, Kim Wong, Mark Webber and Kim Pine. Directed by Edgar Wright.
You know you've done the same character too often when people start referring to the character type by your name. That's kind of what's happened to Michael Cera. The "Michael Cera" character is an awkward, geeky guy who has trouble with girls and is kind of on the outside of society looking in. Scott Pilgrim is basically the same character Michael has been playing since "Superbad", only he's a bit older, a bit more experienced and a lot more self-centered. If the movie was just about him meeting a girl, falling and love and trying to win her over, it would be kind of boring. Thankfully, while that is the basic plot of the story, there is more than enough else going on to make it a great ride.
Scott meets Ramona, the girl of his dreams (literally) and discovers that in order to be able to date her, he has to fight for her. That's not her rule. Her exes have banded together to form The League of Evil Exes, and they pretty much want to destroy anyone who gets close to Ramona. This sets the stage for a number of video-game influenced battles, interspersed with a battle of the bands. The exes range from funny to downright bizarre, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is absolutely amazing as Ramona (it may help that I know a very similar young lady in my own life). Anyway, Michael Cera does a pretty good job of playing himself again, but the rest of the cast is pretty much top to bottom outstanding. The movie was written and directed by Edgar Wright, who also did "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz", and this movie stands at least as strongly as either of them. If it hadn't been for "Kick Ass", it would be my must-see geek movie of the year. As it is, it's still a must see, even if you are getting tired of seeing Michael Cera play MIchael Cera.
