I need a new router. I have a D-Link a/b/g gaming router and in the past month there have been so many wireless networks popping up that my living room (only about 500 feet from my router in the office) completely loses signal strength.
i was thinking about the d-link 855 for dual 2.4 and 5 ghz range... since almost all the routers in my area are G, i also figured upgrading to N would help alot.
i'm totally open to advice here.. i have all 3 consoles, 2 laptops, and an htpc out there that get no signal right now.

This is good. Does anybody have info on what is best to use currently? The wireless router at our church croaked and I am in charge of replacing it. It would be nice to know the difference between G, N and OU812.

Hold off on that D-link Arm, I think that's the one we have at work and although it's always worked fine for me, the updated firmware hoses the router. I'll check the model when I get in tomorrow.
My personal feelings are that any router made by D-link, Netgear or Linksys are better than any other brand and all equally crappy compared to each other.
N standard might help you out if everyone else is using G, but I think they still use the same frequency band so....
Have you considered lining the appartment in lead foil?

I have considered lead foil, but lisa hates the aesthetic and it's financially impossible for us right now... every square foot is crazy... so until they invent transparent lead foil wrap....
thanks for the advice on the dlink.. awaiting your model.
as far as frequency.. can't i just set it to always broadcast at 5ghz to solve the problem? does that work?

Nope, you're good, ours is the 825. The point remains though, check out the company's forums on any router before doing a a firmware flash.
If you have a router and devices that can do the 5ghz band, using that band may help you quite abit assuming that 90%+ of the population opens the box and sets in on the desk. The problem you are having is interference so if there are less devices on the 5ghz band it should help.
