my mic recently went poo poo and now I'm in the market for a new headset and I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.
I'd really like the headphones to be kickass. JR has some 5.1 dealies that sound super neato. And it's mucho importante that they be comfortable for extended wear. An attached mic is a definate plus, but not a deal breaker on it's own. However I need to be able to 'retrofit' some sort of mic to the headset. If you can make all this happen in a wireless package I promise to say at least 3 really nice things about you.

I own the low end Sennheisers, and they are pretty decent. I think it depends on what you want to spend.

I'll never get Plantronics again, after having three of them crap out on me in a row. They are crap.

I'm willing to drop about a buck and a half.

It really depends on what you mean by "kick ass" because I have yet to find a sub-$50 headset that sounds good. But I'm also a bit pickier than a lot of people.

$150 ought to get you something decent!! Sennheisers are supposed to be excellent.

I think Dg has the Seinheisers. My 5.1 headset has no mic (I either wear a 2nd headset on my neck, or lately I've been using a stand-alone mic velcro'd to the ear), and it was only $40. It's a Kinyo set that is comfortable and sounds good. The 3d part is done by a external powered box, though, and mine shorted out due to a loose piece. They still work fine, I just can't fine-tune the sound.

You have velcro hooks on your ears? Anything else we should know? You don't sound Martian at all!

I'm going to need to invest in a good set soon. I have this strange feeling that my soon-to-be wife would be ever so grateful. :)

I have these (http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/earforce/x51/) and I've been pretty happy with them. I think Amazon has them for $50 or so, much cheaper than MSRP.

ok, unless you guys have reason not to, I'll be ordering these this evening.

haha...

Remember how I said I paid $40 for mine?

Mine are Kinyos, a cheapo brand. I don't know if those are knockoffs/rebranded Kinyos or the other way around, but that is the same amplifier/adapter I have.

That amplifier thing broke the second week I had it. Shorted out and made a really annoying looping noise in the phones.

All the reviews I'm reading on the Medusas speak prety highly of them. At $120, I don't think they would be cheap knockoffs of the $40 pair you bought, JR.

what Circuit said.
I did manage to find (after an hour of searching) a user review by someone who owns the Kinyo's and the Medusa's. While he says the amp is the same, and even interchangable, the Medusa's are far superior.

and to echo Circuit, all the Medusa reviews rave about them. All the Kinyo reviews are pretty blah.

so, it's settled - I'm gonna order them. I'll post a 3-10 word review when I have them.

considering I wasn't charged for shipping, THIS (http://www.dhl.com/cgi-bin/tracking.pl?AWB=1211318544) is pretty impressive.

hopefully he/she will leave them at the door since nobody is there to receipt for them today :\

ok, I have had them for 2 days now.

They're pretty comfortable, but get heavy after a while. May just need to get em better adjusted to my melon.
Sound seams good, but MMORPGs aren't the best testing ground for surround sound. It exists, but it's not FPS like. I did have my imp fire a firebolt from behind and I heard it whizz past me.
I'm told by those on Ventrilo that the mic is top notch. It is also attached to this "move-it-anywhere-and-it-stays-where-you-put-it" arm that is very nice.
And to seal the goodyness of the whole deal it came with a little hook I could mount that is designed to hang the headphones on.

I suppose I should load up an FPS of some sort to really put the surround sound to the test, but I'm happy with them.

Thank You!

If that was the mic you were using last night, then yes, it sounds excellent.
