Fox is trying to dig the Alien franchise out of the mediocrety it sank to with Alien 3 & 4 and the AvP series. To that end, a new prequel movie is in the works, and they've lured original franchise director Ridley Scott back to direct it.

So...

The original movie set the bar for suspense pretty high for it's day. Today's moviegoers seem a lot harder to scare, and a lot harder to impress. Add to that Fox's less than stellar handing of the franchise since James Cameron handed them a million dollar baby with Aliens, and it's pretty hard to imagine this coming out as well (even if very different) from the original.

Thoughts?

I agree with the "hard to imagine this coming out well" part.

I'm not even sure what they should do for another Alien movie. A prequel might work but trying to make it scary would probably fall flat. Is the story of the Alien origin interesting enough to go into? Maybe. Oddly, I don't think Scott is a good choice and if he tried to recreate what worked in the first he'd probably muck it all up.

I'd probably have preferred a retcon to pretend 3 and 4 never happened and pick up on events following Aliens.

This has failure written all over it.

1 & 2 were masterpieces, 3 and 4 should never have happened. The AvP things are fun to watch, but I tend to pretend they are completely separate from the alien and predator worlds and are for amusement purposes only.
