The purpose of this forum is twofold and can be broadly summarized as such: first, to prompt you to write and do so on a regular basis and second, to provide a place where you can get feedback on your writing from peers.
What do I need to participate?
The ability to write, write to a deadline and a willingness to offer feedback to others. That's about it.
Are the exercises "choose your own" or dictated?
The format changes from time to time. Currently projects are left to the writer.
How often are the exercises?
Currently a new exercise is due every month.
Do I have to do every exercise?
No, do what you want. If you are having trouble with discipline, I recommend doing each exercise, however.
Do I have to submit on time?
Deadlines aren't enforced but you are more likely to get feedback if you submit closer to the deadline.
Do I have to critique other submissions?
No, but it is greatly appreciated if you do. One of the primary reasons for this is to get feedback on your writing, so you need to give as well as take.
What format is used for submissions? Do I need to host my work?
For short stories we have standardized on using the PDF format. If you cannot save or export your work as a PDF file, save it in one of the usual document formats -- TXT, DOC or RTF -- and mail it to me at creolened@gmail.com. Make sure the subject line is relevant to the exercise.
If you can host your stories, that's great. If not, just mail them as above and I will host them for you. This process may eventually be streamlined.
Is there a website for the exercises?
There was but it has been lost. There may be another website at some point but none is currently planned. This subforum is all for now. There is a separate thread that contains all of the previous exercises and submissions.
What about privacy? I don't want others outside the group to see my stuff.
If you don't want people outside the writing group to see your work, it will be up to you to properly hide public access while still allowing anyone actively participating to read your exercises.
What do we write?
The majority of the exercises are short stories but occasionally will include shorter pieces, poetry and occasionally longer forms like the novella or even a full-fledged novel.
Will the National Novel Writing Month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/) be an exercise?
Yes! We had several participants in NaNoWriMo in 2009 and expect the same for 2010.
