View Full Version : Civ 4
We really should try a game of this, just to see if it is frustrating or not. To whet your appetites...
My Persian empire, on the Earth scenario, circa 1270 AD:

That does look impressive.
I may end up getting the game tomorrow, depending on some other things. If not, I'll probably get it later this month. I'm definetly interested in the game, just not much free time lately.

I've never played any of the Civ games before. They didn't appeal to me.
But, I bought this one. Sat on it for a week. Then gave it a try a couple days ago. The Tutorial is bugged. Sid insists that I build a farm on a plot of forested land, but I don't have copper smithing so I can't clear the forest. ESC/quit.
I then figure ok, I got far enough into the4 tutorial to have a really 'basic' understanding of what's going on. I dive into a game with a random civ on the standrd map size at the settler difficulty. 10 hours and 13 minutes later, I say to my wife, 'that's a neat game, but I'll never play it again. It just takes too fucking long!'
Foe, it is possible to save a game and come back to it later, you know.

Yeah, Civ 4 is one of those "Holy shit, its 6 AM" games. I love it, but hate it at the same time.

I would be up for playing some civ multiplayer. We may want to wait till the patch next week though. I get crashes every once in a while. I also have long pauses sometimes when I play large maps. One of these patches will have the other multiplayer mode pit boss which sounds cool too.

Yeah, a patch would be a good wait. I have the same issues, Postal.
I did end up getting the game today, so I'll probably be giving it a look see a little later tonight.
I finally stopped playing last night in the year 1870 - my empire has grown to 21 cities, and I have a large fleet headed towards the Americas to either colonize the empty lands, or wipe out whoever got there before me
The game is starting to slow down a bit, it is using 800 megs of RAM, so I think we might have to limit multiplayer maps to the normal map size. (Or they might improve performance in the patch and this becomes a non-issue)

On the large maps I had problems where it would slow down so bad that it because unplayable. So yeah I think we will have to do a normal map in the MP. I hope they fix this in the patch becuase I was winning the large map I was playing and I would like to finish it.
