Well, yes. Going into the game and soliciting other players to come over and play the competition is against the EULA. It's also pretty tacky. I know if I'm playing MMO X I don't want some rep from MMO Y sending me /tells imploring me to "come to the other side". That's little better than RMT spam. Going to community sites (non-official channels) and doing the same is fine.

Anyhoo, looks like Cryptic has issued their mea culpa, so the story is pretty much over now.

Yeah, this just seems like one of those ideas someone came up with that sounded good at the time but turned out a lot more ungooder. I'm sure their intentions weren't malicious or anything and I doubt I'd be put off by receiving an invite. But yeah, it's not really all that different than RMT spam and does look pretty shady.
