Gran Torino, starring Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang, Anhey Her and Christopher Carley. Direct by Clint Eastwood.
I consider "Mystic River" to be one of the best movies of all time. I consider "Million Dollar Baby" to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. For me, Clint Eastwood as a director either hits them out of the park or fans out completely. There usually isn't a middle ground. "Gran Torino" hits one completely out of the park.
Clint stars as Walt Kawalski, a Korean war vet who has just lost his wife. He's got two sons he's not close to, and his grandkids just want his stuff. Stuff which includes a 1972 Gran Torino fastback in mint condition. He lives in a neighborhood which has gone completely Asian, something he is not at all happy about. Walt reminds me a lot of my grandfather. Words come out of his mouth that you just can't believe you are hearing.
Anyway, Walt's next door neighbors are an Asian family with no father. When a gang tries to recruit their teenage son, Tao, Walt interferes. This starts an uncomfortable friendship with them for Walt along with an escalating level of violence in the neighborhood. Walt has to come to grips with stuff he did in the war and whether or not he is up to doing it again.
This was a great, funny, amazing movie. Go see it. Five big-ass thumbs up.
