I wanna do a courtroom drama, so lets say the exercise should use words like: Law, Order, and CSI.

I'm kidding about all of this.

Pick a favorite movie and, using original characters, write a story which recognizably occurs in parallel to the events in the film.

Write a short story where two famous historical personages who never really met, meet.

Write a story about a storm.

Write a heist caper.

Write a story about life in (moderator picks a year).

Write your ideal death scene (yes, YOUR death).

Write a 1,000 word story.

I'm also very partial to the here's a title or picture, write a story to go with it projects.

Write a heist caper in a storm with two famous historical personages who never really met in a year the moderator picks with YOUR ideal death scene in a 1,000 word story in parallel to a favorite movie or tv show.

or a dinner scene where someone ends up leaving in a huff.

defector: someone swaps sides

overcrowded lifeboat scenario where someone in a group has to be tossed overboard/pushed out the airlock/pitched over the side of the hot air balloon basket or everyone dies.

or maybe:

a defector, having dinner with a group of people, has to kill someone...

You may find some ideas on Writing Fix (http://writingfix.com/index.htm#), in particular, their Right-brained Writing Prompts (http://writingfix.com/right_brain.htm).

I've re-jiggered this thread to serve as an all-purpose one for writing exercise suggestions. If you ever have an idea, feel free to post it here.

jackrabbit has officially bowed out of the exercises (he submitted the paperwork and had it notarized and everything) but I don't really want to turn this into "do whatever wacky thing Ned suggests" so feel free to submit more ideas. If you prefer, you can send to them to me via PM instead of hanging them out here all public-like.
