I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop the other day. When I first installed it, I had sound but it was mono, sounded like crap and muting the audio in Volume Control wasn't muting the audio in Movie Player. I tried to fix it, and lost sound completely. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling ALSA, resetting Pulseaudio to the installation defaults, and so on. Nothing has worked, I still have no sound. If anyone can tell me what to do next to try fixing it, I'd be much appreciated. I'd like to get it working again before my XP reinstall Cd's get here from Dell (I ordered tonight, probably won't ship before Tuesday), it'll save me from scrapping yet another attempt to learn something of Linux and going running back to XP.

Download and install the Windows 7 beta. It's pretty sweet!

Coincidentally, my problems with my Audigy and Ubuntu caused me to go back to XP. I love it but it's just too much bother.

Also, you might want to give Fedora 10 a try. It's brand spankin' new and has been getting rave reviews and has caused all the Linux dudes I know to switch from Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Wow, 3 replies in the span of a few seconds.

Sound card is Intel810 chipset audio. Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9300.

I just downloaded and installed the ubuntu-restricted metapackage, and the audio is much better. I'm thinking my original issue was related to a lousy Quicktime codec.

my linux use is limited to server apps only now. i was going to say, you usually dont get good audio or video without usint the restricted packages.
