With 15 votes apiece for each poll, here's how the tally stands as of July 20th:

Unreal Tournament (original) 13
Tribes 2 12
Tribes: Vengeance 12
Unreal 10
Quake 2 10
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault 10
Unreal 2 (with XMP) 10
Battlefield 1942 10
Halo (PC) 9
Doom 3 8
Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast 8
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight 7
Quake 3 7
No One Lives Forever 2 7
Quake (original) 6
Call of Duty 2 6
Serious Sam 2 5
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy 4
Prey 4
Quake 4 (full game) 4
Doom 2 3
I consider any game that gets at least six votes to be viable for Smackdowns. This actually gives us a lot of choices but a few people who rarely play in SDs have voted and I give their picks a little less weight accordingly.

At this point, tradition dictates that we play the original Unreal Tournament for Smackdown 200 but anything else prior to that is up for grabs. Looking at the results, please offer your input on which of the above games (with six or more votes) you'd like to play. I'd ask you to name at least three. Go!

Also feel free to lobby for a game you'd like to play that didn't quite make the cut. Most of these titles are now in bargain bin territory (if they can still be found).

Did we ever figure out Tais password?

I got drunk and forgot to download the client last night. Will try again over the weekend. Also, my three votes, in no particular order, are:

Tribes:Vengeance
Tribes:Vengeance

I wouldn't mind giving T:V a try, if I can manage to find my CD key. Some Q2 CTF or Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast might be fun, too.

I'll see if I can find my spare, I bought two copies of T:V, but don't have it installed at the office any more.

Unreal would be very fun. Especially if we can find a patch pre-1.19

I may have to figure out how to make the old Dark Disciples tag again :)

I found the 1.01 here (http://www.oldunreal.com/patch/official/unrealpatch101.exe)

Depending on their games, wouldn't this point more to the games (Unreal Tournament x100000) and could increase play?

To a point, yeah, but the Smackdowns have always been UT-centric.

As the past few weeks have shown, I'm certainly open to other games and the polls are a way of gauging the viability of other titles but it just isn't easy to get a good-sized group of us to commit to *any* single game.

I know some people don't attend because they are tired of UT but for others it's just lack of interest in general or problems with scheduling.

All that said, if a bunch of people who don't regularly play all agreed on "Game X" then you bet your bippy I'd run a Smackdown with Game X. :)

I also realized I forgot a possible darkhorse in both polls (a double doh because I own it) - Painkiller. I'm not going to add a third poll for it (and say, Gore :P) but if anyone has it, feel free to chime in.

I've also updated the poll results. A lot of us certainly drank the Kool-aid with T:V. :bg: Don't hit me, Tai, I know you loves the game! I'm also surprised at the strong showing for Unreal 2. id and 3D Realms must be sad to see that two of the more recent titles (Quake 4 and Prey) failed to grab more than a few of us.

Tis all good, I just like being vocal :)

If we play any of the Tribes games for a Smackdown, could we please do some version of a team game? Even standard DM would be good, but stuff like Rabbit really favors only a couple of players and the rest of us (read: non-skiers) would basically only be showing up to be shot.

Tai

I dislike Rabbit. I like Capture and Hold.

I re-installed Jedi Outcast last night and puttered around a bit in the multiplayer. We must have played more than I remembered because the maps were all familiar to me. This is a more complex game than the Quakes and UTs when you add in the force powers and light sabers. I think it might be fun for an SD or two if we can corral enough people to play.

Q

Is Outcast the third Dark Forces game?

Tai

I found it for $19 on gogamer. I never played it, but it has lightsabers....

Creole Ned

Yes, Q. The series goes like so:

Dark Forces (in-house, "2.5D" engine)
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (in-house, 3D engine)
Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast (Raven, Q3 engine)
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Raven, Q3 engine)

I think I have outcast. I may even have access to a working monitor after this weekend, so I may soon re-join the smackdowns.

I don't see it on the poll results, but Farcry may have just become a possibility...

Ubi released the original Farcry for free this weekend (along with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Rayman: Raving Rabbids). All you need to get it is a free Fileplanet account (to download) and a free Ubi.com account (to install). The games are now ad sponsored, but the ads appear only in the menus, not in the gameplay.

I have most of the old Unreal patches on my hard drive, including 2.18. And I concur, old Unreal would be great.

For those who loathe Fileplanet, you can now download Farcry from Fileshack too.

Also, the original Red Storn "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" is now an ad-supported free download.

No more "I lost my GR cd's" excuses! Unfortunately, I don't think the Island Thunder and Desert Seige expansions are included.

My excuse has never been "I can't find my CDs". It was "I think GR plays like dooky". :)

Creole Ned

oh, there's gonna be trouble when someone whose name starts with "jack" and ends with "rabbit" sees that. :o

What I remember most about GR is how brutally unforgiving it was. Thinking about it now still makes me want to play, though.

Ghost Recon and every other "tactical shooter'" before or since SUCKS

I think the problem with GR for me is the fact that, unlike you guys, I didn't play it when it came out. I'm sure it was good for its time, but it just felt really clunky to me after playing Raven Shield. Plus, having just a reticle and no weapon model was weird.

Yeah, going backwards in the Red Storm series has always felt clunky because they keep adding improved features. I once tried to go back to play Rogue Spear after Ghost Recon and that was a very similar experience.
