Sony cuts the price of PS3 as Microsoft estimates 1.5 billion for XBOX repair bill (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/09/business/09sony.html?ref=business)
Looks like getting into the 3rd gen console wars late in the game might save me some cash.
I was thinking of getting a 360 but the malfunctions turned me off. I'm hoping that Microsoft 1) fixes the problem and B) lowers the price due to this bad publicity.
Although I am still leaning towards a PS3, even moreso now that it's $100 less and the multiplayer network is free. Plus, there's that whole Blu-ray thing.
I just hope Gamespot gives me a decent trade-in value on my XBOX, PS2, and assorted games for both.

I heard that on the coattails of the PS3 drop in price that the XBOX360 is going to drop as well in order to stay competitive with the PS3

Isn't the 360 currently much cheaper than the PS3, even with the price drop?

Out of curiosity, why are you leaning toward a PS3?
So apparently, along with the $100 price drop on the 60gb PS3, they're introuducing a new 80gb model. That seems...odd. Were people really not spending $600 on it because of not enough hard drive space? Sony just really doesn't seem to have a handle on this generation of consoles. They need lots of good games really quickly or else the PS3 isn't going to last much longer. The only thing they have going for them currently is the whole Blu-ray thing. It's the only thing we use our PS3 for.

Yep it is Q. I think they are doing it to keep that gap the same in order to entice folks to go with the XBOX over the PS3 because it is so much cheaper and LOOK! now its even cheaper than it was, factor.
I'm leaning towards a PS3 for a number of reasons, most which are echoed in this article (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6125087/index.html?type=tech).
I like the Blu-Ray player, built in WiFi, free network play.
This sounds like a pretty good deal. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_5139532_1/105-4160472-0779610?ie=UTF8&docId=1000106451&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=special-offers-3&pf_rd_r=1R7KT17RF5CKVBE5VV3E&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=298102701&pf_rd_i=B0009VXAM0)
$100 off PS3 60GB, with free Blu-Ray remote and 5 free Blu-Ray disks.

Yeah, they shoulda included a tube of supa-wii-glue.
The state of affairs with PS3 games brings to mind how things were when the XBOX and PS2 were released. The PS2 beat XBOX to the market (October 2000 vs. November 2001) and always had more games available for it. However XBOX caught up and had a great many quality games of it's own. XBOX was also the more powerful machine and over time, developers began utilizing that technology.
Fast forward to today.
360 out almost a year before PS3. Obviously, 360 has more native games made due to it's early release. However just like the XBOX of old, the PS3 is the more powerful machine (although the 360's GPU is better).
I'm banking on the fact that my old PS2 games can still be played on it, the PS3 has tons more built in features, so far there hasn't been a problem with most of the machines breaking, and that gaming houses that have traditionally developed for the PS1 and PS2 will still develop for the PS3.
If the history of games on the PS1 and PS2 is any inkling, games for the PS3 are the least of my worries. With the number of titles out already and my severely limited gaming time, by the time I actually finished 3-4 games there will be dozens more already released.

Heh, well if you want a 60GB PS3 at the reduced price, you better get it quickly. (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704) For the lazy, Sony announced at E3 that they're not going to make the 60GB SKU after they sell out of their current stock, which they say will likely happen by the end of the month. After that, your only choice is the $600 80GB PS3. What a bunch of weirdos.

Ha, so the $100 price drop is effectively meaningless? No wonder Microsoft didn't announce one of their own. :P
That will make two discontinued versions of the PS3 in it's first year. That's freaking retarded.

The plot thickens! (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6427&Itemid=2) Actually, it doesn't. It just continues to get progressively more retarded and strange. Sony is saying now that all the talk of discontinuing the 60GB SKU is incorrect, despite Sony execs (including Kaz Hirai himself) said quite clearly that they have no intentions of selling two SKUs in the US and that the 60GB PS3 is "no longer in production". So either the president of the company has no idea what's going on or everyone at Sony who speaks to the Press is drunk all the time.

Yeah, they've bungled this whole thing quite well. Maybe they'll announce the PS4 next week!
The plot thickens even more. (http://www.reuters.com/article/consumerproducts-SP/idUSN1130491420070712)
Sony Corp. is likely to cut its PlayStation 3 price again by year-end following this week's $100 cut, a senior executive at Japanese game software maker Capcom Co. Ltd. said.
Dunno if a Sr. Exec. at Capcom is privy to any information others aren't. Although if this is the plan and I were Sony, I'd be pissed because who's going to buy a PS3 now if they know the price will be dropped another hundred by Xmas?
Circuit

Yeah. The thing is with the price going back up to $600 after the 60GB models are gone, they wouldn't be dropping the price by "another hundred". They'd have to come down even more to make it meaningful. Average Video Gamer doesn't care about an extra 20GB of hard drive space, especially since there's not 60GB worth of content in the Playstation Store.
I've decided to go with the PS3 and nabbed one on eBay for $550 that included an HDMI cable, 2 wireless controllers, controller charger, and 2 games (Resistance: Fall of Man, and MotorStorm).
There are a few games on the 360 I'm interested in (none of which start with 'Halo'...never really liked that game...seemed very bland) which were tempting to me (plus a 3 week old 360 Elite for $390 I came across this weekend on Craigslist that was being sold in my town) but most of them are going to be released on the PS3 as well (Assassin's Creed, Dark Sector, UT3, HL:2, Fracture, etc.).
Bioshock - Not on PS3 but will be out on PC.
Gears of War - Will be released on PC soon.
So that made Mass Effect the only 360 title coming up that I wouldn't be able to play unless I bought a 360. Mass Effect looks pretty sweet but when factoring in titles released on 360 that will also appear on the PC but will not be released on PS3, the number of exclusives dropped significantly compared to exclusives coming out on PS3 that will not be available on any other system, PC included.
System reliability was a major factor as well as free network play. Yes the PS3 network is miniscule compared to XBOX Live but it's free and I'm liking the things I'm hearing about the direction Sony is taking it. As far as reliability, I can't help but feeling that getting a 360 right now is a crapshoot. Not to mention there is no way I would have bought a used one.
I still think I might purchase a 360 down the road if Microsoft fixes the issues with it but for now I'm gonna bank on the PS3 based off of the deal I got and the fact that my PS2 was arguably the best console I ever owned.
