id has released a new version of the Quake 4 multiplayer demo (1.4.2) that includes three maps and various game modes. I am curious to see how my server will handle it and would like to test it for a potential Smackdown.

You can find a link to the download here (http://www.idsoftware.com/downloads/shambler.php?id=13031) (currently goes to a Fileshack page). Note: This demo is not compatible with the retail version or any previous demos. It is, however, a relatively svelte 251 MB.

Please let me know if you get it.

I have also set up a Prey demo server (it comes with two whole maps!)

You can get the demo at the official Prey website (http://www.prey.com/flash.html), among other places.

Circuit and Postal helped test out Q4 and it seems to run well enough but the gameplay feels a bit odd. Most of the weapons have projectiles but the projectiles are very small and don't "track" well. The rockets in particular feel off, with faint wispy trails.

It's otherwise fairly standard but I think there's some potential there for a Smackdown or two.

Prey, on the other hand, is very trippy. Most of the weapons are organic-looking, you can go out of body to access areas you otherwise couldn't get to and the two included levels feature the twisty "walk on the ceiling" thing. This could be an interesting variant on the usual shooter.

I'd recommend people grab both demos and check 'em out. I'd like to run both with more than a couple of people to see how they work under load. Mebbe sometime this week between all the other gaming shenanigans.

Just to confirm, we will be using the Prey demo for a (near) future Smackdown, so grab it now and have a look-see.
