Okay, so I get to California, and that's cool and all, but then I install the new WoW patch on my laptop and it locks up and won't work anymore. So I uninstall the video drivers and download the latest clean ones off the IBM website and the laptop works fine but WoW won't work now.
So then I decide to get some work done instead and we have an earthquake that is 4.2 on the Richter Scale in the San Joaquim Valley which means that the buildings get to shake and the lights swing around and the teams we're interviewing get to laugh at the newbies when their eyes bug out while everything is moving entirely out of their control. And after that I find out that there is some hurricane or something and my flight is going through Houston the day it's going to land so I call and get my flight re-routed and I get bumped out of First Class which sucks but I get an exit row seat which is definitely better than nothing, and we're going through Cleveland which apparently did not have earthquake or hurricane problems or anything like that.
And then on the plane I discover I am seated next to James Avery, who played Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" on television, and we talk about God and Terry Pratchett and a few other things, and I get drunk and then I had to see my in-laws today because they drove down for a day just to see the baby and now I am going to sleep for like twelve hours because Monday I am supposed to fly to Houston to interview project teams at a refinery that will probably be three feet under water.
So, that's me. How are you guys?

You met James Avery?

I played the theme to the Benny Hill Show while reading your post. Everyone should try it!

I am not drunk nor have I experienced any flooding, hurricanes or earthquakes recently. I am a bit older, though, and mopped my kitchen floor.

Yes I did.

So that was your first earthquake?
So that was your first earthquake?
Heh, they're fun! You should really read Loggy's post out loud so that you can get the total effect of the run on sentences - it leaves you breathless, which I imagine is how he feels.
Welcome back!

Also, you should be drunk, which not only makes it read better, it makes you feel better, too!
In 1979 I was having breakfast with my family in some fine restaurant early in the morn (Denny's or Sambo's or somesuch) in the lovely town of San Jose when a large truck began rumbling down the street. Except it wasn't a truck, it was a 5.9 earthquake. A pair of girls at a nearby booth ran out of the restaurant in panic while we just sat there as everything shook real good for about 10 or 15 seconds. The epicenter was, I believe, about 20 or so miles away.
We felt it completed our California experience.
(Apparently a 6.0 is considered a major quake.)
Living in the Pacific northwest (or as we call it in BC, the Pacific southwest), I've experienced a few quakes now and then and even remember the screen door on our house rattling enough to notice when Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980 - and it's about 400 miles away. My sister for a long time believed that Vancouver Island (where I grew up) would sink if we got The Big One. She never explained how exactly this would happen. I guess she thought islands float. I had to explain to her that the island was actually on the back of a giant turtle and was completely safe as long as the turtle was kept fed and happy.
We had a 3.something up here in Mass a few years back, but I slept through it (it happened somewhere around 8 or 9 am, and at the time I was working nights). Those who were awake say they could feel it, but it didn't affect my dream or anything.
Probably a good thing. The earth ain't supposed to move.

??? If the earth didn't move we wouldn't have gravity.
Beer bongs would never work then.

Also my hat would fly off my head. Think of my hat, won't you? :(
We'd still have gravity if the earth didn't move!

if there is gravity the Earth must move, therefore if the Earth didn't move there would not be gravity.
If the earth didn't move, there would be gravity, but the earth would fall into the sun. Gravity isn't dependent on motion, but staying in orbit is.
That said, the earth shouldn't move in ways I can detect without measuring the position of the stars.

I'm not implying gravity is dependant on motion, but stating that because of gravity nothing can not be in motion. If the Earth is falling into the Sun then the Earth is moving. If the Earth was not moving, a state of no gravity must exist or the Earth would start moving because of gravity. So, if's there's no motion, there's no gravity, even though gravity doesn't depend on motion.
I further postulate that on this motionless, gravityless Earth we would find new ways to make beer bongs work.
And Circuit could put a chin strap on his hat :wavey:

Way to make gravity stop working, Log! Now I'm gonna have to pay Foe money for his hat chin strap idea. I'm sure you'll find some way to blame it on Uncle Phil, though.

man, what a crazy week you had.....
...is vent working yet?
LogRoller
09-26-2005, 04:47 AM
Yeah, vent is working, actually.
I beg to differ - you could have a state of gravity and no motion. You would just need a bunch of really large rocket engines placed strategically around the Earth. Or a blackhole or other group of large masses positioned such to cancel the Sun's gravity well at the Earth's location.
Of course, these approaches would have their own sets of problems...
Loggy, your week sucked.

Loggy, your week sucked.
I agree! I'd be hating to go to Houston this week! Although it is pretty cool you got to meet Uncle Phil! Guess he's not riding 1st class like the Fresh Prince...
We had Hurrican Opal several years back & that was unusual to affect us this far inland... stranger yet, a couple of years ago, there was a sonic bomb that hit in the wee hours & everyone thought 'was that an earthquake?'

Is there an eay way to remember when to use 'affect' & when to use 'effect'?

Is there an eay way to remember when to use 'affect' & when to use 'effect'?That is an excellent non-sequiter. :bg:
I don't think there is an easy way to remember. You can affect someone so it has an effect on them. Does that help?

haha, nothing of substance. I posted in the thread.
A lady walked over, and I thought that she was going to yell at me, but she just asked if I could move to the back of the room so that I did not disturb the folks watching television by holding my monitor up.
