Sometimes it's nice to cleanse the palette. Although UT2004 has a boatload of mods available, I'm open to throwing another game into the mix, so offer this thread for suggestions.
Keep in mind a few factors for what makes a good Smackdown game:
- can work with 8-10 players (preferably both FFA and team-based)
- is readily available both in terms of being easy to find and cheap (or free)
- doesn't have strange or high system requirements
Go!
You knew this was coming:
Tribes:Vengeance
Team Fortress Classic?
World of Warcraft Arena Teams (please don't shoot me)

I'm not sure if it has TDM but Rune has some awesome fun FFA. Its probably old enough that they pay you to take it now.

oh, Rune. I remember that.
Halo 2 is due out in a few weeks. That would also be a good one.

Halo 2 requires Vista.

What? I think it requires DX10, and already people are getting DX10 to work on XP.
if indeed it requires Vista, then the future is bleak indeed.

Haven't tried any of these yet, but looking for stuff that meets the criteria, I stumbled upon...
Bloodmasters (http://www.fileplanet.com/176653/170000/fileinfo/Bloodmasters-[Free-Game) - It's free, supports DM and TDM, and it's a top down shooter... about 50MB download.
World of Padman (http://www.fileplanet.com/175913/170000/fileinfo/World-of-Padman---[Free-Game) - Another freebie. This one was a Quake 3 mod, and has now been converted to a stand-alone free FPS. Looks like it may be something along the lines of the "big room" maps for the UT series, like the giant living room and so on... but I'm basing that solely on the picture on the file page, and I have no idea if the whole game is made of those maps or not. About a 550MB download.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory (http://www.fileplanet.com/124800/120000/fileinfo/Return-to-Castle-Wolfenstein:-Enemy-Territory-Client-v2.55) - Yep, now free. About 260MB.

I'm up for any of the games that Pal suggested, because I am broke and don't want to buy any games. It would be nice to join in a smackdown with you guys, but I don't blame you if you want to play the games for which you have paid. But for the summer, I most likely will be around more for the smacking of the down, so hopefully I'll get a chance to have you all kick my ass. :)

I think enough of us have 360s now to maybe use a game on there for a Smackdown.

no 360 here...
though i've thought about it... i still can't afford it, and i still really and truly dislike the controller.

That isn't a bad idea. What can accomodate 10 or so people, though?

Does Gears of War take that many?

I don't think so. The closest I can come up with are the Ghost Recon games.

I think GoW does 8, max.
I imagine a racing game is probably the best bet. We did Burnout a few times I recall.
