View Full Version : Chocolate Milk Horror

I thought I would have a quick glass of chocolate milk before going to bed tonight.

The glass mixed and ready, I take in a mouthful, only to find out that I did not indeed use chocolate syrup.

IT WAS MAPLE SYRUP.

Now, due to the odd taste of skim milk and Mrs. Butterworth, I am wide awake.

I spent the past two hours looking for:

• conversion filters for Lotus AmiPro
• my Office 2000 Disc 1 (yes, a legit copy!)
• my collection of short stories scattered on various CD's
• a way to read multisession CD's without Easy CD Creator, since I stupidly backed up a bunch of stuff about five years ago doing just this

And then:

• wondering why, of the many stories I had written, I had apparently decided to only ever put about six on CD
• digging out a box of old floppy disks ominously labelled "Word 2.0 docs" and so forth
• copying over every last stinking story I could find, enjoying that wonderful grinding noise that a floppy drive makes when accessing a disk
• starting the long process of reading though stories that were written 10-15 years ago and deciding which, if any, deserve to see the light of day

All in all, I think pogo had a much worse time than me.

Similar story. A while back, someone at work made a run to Dunkin Donuts to get coffee and whatnot for people. I got my usual...a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich on a cinamon raisin bagel.

When I got my sandhich, and took a bite, I discovered that they'd made it on an onion bagel. Which is bout as far as you can get flavor wise from a cinamon raisin bagel and still be in the bagel family.

The maple syrup is worse, tho.

On the plus side, at least it wasn't that strawberry syrup they sell. Has anyone ever actually used that to make strawberry milk?

When i was a kid I used the strawberry powder. Cant say i used the syrup tho. Dont think it was out yet way back in the day.

I remember tv dinners that were aimed at kids and they had the flavored sugar packets for milk. They were blue, pink and purple. I liked the purple one (resembled grape of course) and the pink was strawberry but I never had the blue because it always seemed to be packaged with the nasty main courses. This would have been circa 1975. Can't remember the name of them.

1975. I wasn't even born yet. I also suggest Pogo invest in one of them oversized label makers so he can easily read the contents of whatever he is putting into his milk.

I know a guy who misread the label of a bottle of corn oil and tried to use it in his deep fryer.

The label said corn syrup.

On a milk note, I've had the pink milk they sell in stores. It is strawberry flavored, and if you can get past the fact that it looks like Peptobysmal... it's not bad for desert, but I hate chocolate, so that might skew me a bit.

Strawberry Quik is awesome. It's like having a Pop Tart in liquid form.

Not liking chocolate is uncivilized!

Mwahahahaha! I am trying to imagine the mess the corn syrup must have made in that fryer! ROFL

And you don't like chocolate? I did not know such people existed. It's like somebody saying they don't like fries. Everybody likes fries and chocolate! (Unless you are alergic to either. In that case you are excused.)

let me preface by saying this: I love chocolate.

However, I hate French Fries. Oil-soaked potato does nothing for me. Ick.
Really, though - oil-soaked anything is pretty much off my list. I know being from Wisconsin I'm supposed enjoy deep-fried anything. I just can't get past the idea of an item being submerged in hot oil being good with any sort of food.

It's official!

I don't truely HATE chocolate... it's like mayo... it does nothing for me. I like the reverse Reese's peanutbutter cups (the ones that are like 3/4th peanutbutter and 1/4th chocolate) cake brownies and Nuttybars. That's about it.

Fried food is yummy. Next time I'm around JR, I'll have someone take a picture of us side by side and let everyone guess which one loves fried food.

As far as drinking or eating something unexpected? I've grabbed a soda thinking it was my beer more than once. Not as good as Maple-milk, but nasty none the less.

Ever have a deep-fried turkey?
Tastes nothing of the oil (if drained correctly), and the most juicy bird I've ever had.
Did a few chickens like that too. Oooooomama, they're good.

Can you teach me not to like French Fries? Please? It would be a great health improvement for me. I can stay away from chips, especially BBQ chips -- disgusting! I always make my husband buy those cuz I know I won't want any. But I don't have an equally good trick for fries. Not even thinking of them as "French" works to cause any significant aversion.

(BTW: Did I ever tell you that some nice college girls from Northwestern found my wallet in a small alley in Paris and sent it back to me? Everything was still in it - credit cards, green card, drivers license etc. The only thing missing was the cash.)

fried foods done good don't taste of oil. It helps to use something a little lighter than corn syrup, of course...

Fried foods with skin on them (whole turkeys or chickens, wings, etc) will only taste oily if they're overcooked or a bad oil is used. Breaded items are similar The lighter the oil, the better...but the more often you have to change it out and clean out the fryer, which is a pain (especially when you're using two 40-pound commercial friers....the 80 pounds total is like 12 gallons of oil). Fries are about the easiest to overcook, because they naturally absorb the oil. You need to cook em just right and serve them fresh to not taste oily.

I worked with a girl who did the mayo thing. I like mayo, but on fries? ew...

Mayo on fries isn't really an "ew" thing to me, but it's not something I'd choose to eat.

As for consuming things I thought were completely different things, one of the memories that stands out for me had to do with a bottle of Snapple. I was at some art thing back in high school and they fed us free lunch with drinks. I was really thirsty and picked up a big bottle of Snapple from the ice cooler. I didn't really look at what flavor it was, but I equated Snapple with fruit juice and assumed it was some form of that. I opened it up and took a giant gulp to find out that it was unsweetened ice tea. I don't hate tea or anything, but there's just something about expecting a sweet, fruity flavor and getting something way more bitter. It made me sick for a while that day and definitely made me more careful with my drink choices.

I've also had to deal with the whipped cream/sour cream switcheroo. It's just nasty to dip a piece of fruit into what you think is a bowl of nice, sweet whipped cream and become instantly disappointed. Doing the opposite with a piece of broccoli is equally vomit-inducing. :o

Oh Dear Lisa;

It is not that you posted, it is what you posted that brings to mind the horrible feeling in my tummy.......

It is nice hearing from you again, but I second the notion that you are in fact pregnant, or if not, an alien. Either way is cool. I'm just saying.

My Dearest Lisa;

I offer you my humblest appologies. I've just come back from McDonalds, after ordering a BigMac, fries, and vanilla shake. As I took a few fries out of the bag, I thought of you and our earlier posts, and then took a pull of the shake.

That's when it hit me. Fries and a shake. Oh no.

So I'll be seeing my doctor later today. Let's hope I have a boy.

Andri
09-14-2005, 12:59 PM
If you give birth later today -- and I don't care whether to a boy or a girl -- I want to get the patent on you. However, I expect that the only thing you will give birth to is a giant milkshake, and I don't want the patent on that.

I am, BTW, also a great fan of the Canadian Poutine. The gravy and the cheese are both yummy! Fries with ice cream though... Dunno. I'd rather pass on that one, Eurogal or no.

and I couldn't stop giggling. :)

ketchup or salt and vinegar on the chips, never mayo. I do like mayo on brocolli though. Shake and chips rock, so I don't think Lisa is pregnant (but if she is, many congrats!).

I like maple syrup on (vanilla) ice cream too.
