This may matter if you're into Thanksgiving sales.

It's looking like Amazon will be selling 1000 Xbox 360 core (no hard drive) systems for $100 on Thanksgiving Day. They are letting people vote on which of 4 deals they want, with the winning deal going on sale at 11AM (PST) Thanksgiving Day. Right now, the Xbox 360 deal is winning with 88% of the vote. Hanging chads not withstanding, it looks like this will be the deal. For the record, this is $199.99 off list price.

Wow. That's almost worth buying as a backup.

I'm doing it.

Wait. Is it possible to add a hard drive and the other stuff to a Core system later on?

yes, I believe you can add the hard drive after. I'm going to be playing at Pirate again that morning, no clicky for me :(

I'm gonna be slamming that site at 2PM on Thanksgiving. I can only hope I'm quick enough.

I'm gonna have to set up an Amazon account that's like "buy it now with this card and ship it to this address" or something, so it goes through in a few clicks.

I bought the Core system, Patton. The only thing it doesn't come with is the hard drive, headset, HD component cable and it has a wired instead of wireless controller. It's a total ripoff for $300 compared to the full system, but it's awesome for $100.

I think Amazon Canada is offering a similar deal, except the Core system is full price but comes with a free k.d. lang CD.

I actually think that is what I'd get even if I were paying full price. I wanna play the games I want to play and see if I really NEED those other things. The only thing there that I might want is the component cable.

Oh, with that in mind - does anyone know if there are HDMI cables for the 360?

There are no HDMI cables, currently.

The Core system is a poor value, because the items that come with the Premium cost less in the suite than they do independantly. For HDTV you will need separate cables ($40). You will very likely need an HDD ($99) or at the least, a memory card ($49). You will need a headset if you plan to play online ($19-$39). The wireless controller is nice, but the battery that's supposed to last 25 hours only lasts about 15 or so across the span of a week. Maybe it lasts 25 hours if you play all day? If you charge it, it becomes corded. You can only charge when the Xbox 360 is on, so if you wish to stay wireless you need a charger and battery pack ($29?). It adds up. For $100, I'd accept a Core, but I'd recommend a Premium if you don't manage to get one.

Well, if I can't get one for 100 bucks, I won't be getting one. :)

A big part of what makes the 360 such a great system is Xbox Live and you can't properly experience that without a hard drive. I bought the Core system because that's all I could find, even though I didn't buy it until February.
