Starting this Saturday, local stations (about 200 across the country) that air the syndicated Star Trek (or which were running Enterprise) will begin broadcasting the classic Trek (Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc), but...
Paramount has been busily remastering the shows since March, so the shows will all be new transfers from the original film masters (they did hi-definition remasters for eventual HD or Blu-ray release). Here's the kicker... they are redoing all of the outer space shots with new CGI. Before you purists cry foul, or think they are pulling a Lucasfilm, while the shots are being redone using modern graphics, they are using the original models and shots as the basis, so while it will look different (no more ships on a stick), it won't look that different. That said, they are changing some of the models where they were reused in different episodes. I haven't seen it, but they say they are redoing the phaser and photon torpedo effects too. Additionally, they are adding some background effects to the matte paintings during the planet-based scenes, so the backgrounds won't look so static. No major changes to the live-action scenes, like replacing the old Klingons with the movie/TNG look.
Unfortunately, it isn't airing around me, so if anyone catches it, please post your reviews here. I'm very curious to see it.
